Toronto Region Sustainability Program client recognized for environmental achievements
Metalon Technology Ltd – a small family owned metal coatings facility in Orangeville, Ontario – won an Environmental Excellence Award for 2006 from the Dufferin County Chamber of Commerce.
The senior management team at Metalon was honoured to be recognized by the Dufferin County Chamber of Commerce for its commitment to environmental sustainability and continuous improvement through a number of initiatives including participation in the Toronto Region Sustainability Program. A P2 Assessment conducted through the program assisted the firm in identifying several pollution prevention opportunities that will eliminate 3.6 tonnes of hazardous waste, 100 kilograms of VOCs and save the firm over $7000 annually.
Several P2 options have already been implemented at Metalon. For example, through product substitution in the masking operations, Metalon has completely eliminated its use of Toluene and achieved a 98 percent reduction in its use of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) by switching to a non-VOC generating maskant (UV curable material) and non-VOC solvents. Metalon is also investigating the installation of ultra filtration units for its alkaline cleaning baths which when implemented will reduce its consumption of chemical cleaners as well as reduce hazardous waste generation by 3.6 tonnes per year.
According to President and Owner of Metalon, Mr. John Gilbert, "Participating in the Toronto Region Sustainability Program led the management team and employees to gain a clearer vision of their role in helping to reduce pollution. In fact Metalon’s participation in the program was more than just a little instrumental in helping the firm win this year’s award from local Chamber of Commerce for Environmental Excellence".
