Water is essential for human and ecosystem health; it is required for all sustainable production and consumption activities. It is pervasive; the integration of water in all aspects of life continues to shape our communities and lives. Population growth, urbanization and industrialization are key factors that are increasing global demand for fresh water, while aging and deteriorating infrastructure and climate change are impacting supply.
A report by the Conference Board of Canada estimates that the global market in 2008 for water and wastewater was in excess of US $400 billion. According to LUX Research, by 2020, the global water market is expected to reach approximately US $1 trillion.
Ontario is a leading jurisdiction with considerable water strengths and assets. These include a strong regulatory regime, an internationally recognized research community and an established track record in developing world-class technologies. Ontario is also well situated geographically, with excellent business connections to a large and diverse US market. Many of the water challenges faced by Ontario such as the need to improve water efficiency, reduce the increasing cost of managing water, deliver clean water to rural and remote communities, as well as maintaining and revitalizing aging infrastructure, are also concerns in other jurisdictions across Canada and around the world.
In response to these significant water trends and opportunities, OCETA and XPV Capital, in collaboration with several key organizations, including the Ontario Centres of Excellence, the Ontario Clean Water Agency, Sustainable Development Technology Canada, the United Nations University Institute on Water, Environment and Health, and Water Canada magazine, have completed a study on The Water Opportunity for Ontario.
