PROCESS/ PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
  • ISO 14001 Assessment, Implementation, and Audit Software
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
  • user customization
The ISO 14000 series of standards were developed to provide companies with internationally recognized standards for establishing, maintaining and auditing effective environmental management systems (EMS). To assist businesses in improving the performance of their EMS with respect to ISO 14001, the EMS specification standard, GreenWare has created three comprehensive and fully customizable software products: 1. ISO 14000 Assessment: EMS assessment software for use by companies in eval- uating the performance of their EMS with respect to meeting the requirements of ISO 14001; 2. ISO 14000 Implementation: EMS implementation software to assist companies in implementing an EMS that meets the requirements of ISO 14001; 3. ISO 14000 Audit: EMS audit software for use by both external ISO 14000 auditors and companies' internal auditors for ISO 14001 registration audits or self-declaration purposes. Together these software products provide companies and/or their consultants with a complete electronic tool set for use in evaluating, implementing, monitoring and auditing environmental management systems for their conformance to ISO 14001.
PROCESS/ PRODUCT APPLICATION:
  • ISO 14000 environmental management systems
  • ISO 14000 registration/ self- declaration
  • gap analysis/ self- assessment
  • cost
  • licences
GreenWare software can be used by companies of all sizes and in any industry, regardless of where they are in the process of implementing an ISO 14001 EMS in their operations. With this software, companies can assess their compliance with the ISO 14001 requirements, and make any changes required to conform to the standard. Each product can be used as a stand-alone package or in combination with the other products. GreenWare products have all been designed to provide users with maximum flexibility and customization capabilities in implementing their ISO 14000 strategies. For example, the ISO 14000 Assessment software can be used as a first step in assessing the status of companies' EMS, or part-way through implementation to assess their current status and prepare Figure 1 Figure 1: An example of an ISO 14001 gap analysis report

an action plan for improve- ment or further implementation, as well as by companies preparing for an ISO 14001 registration audit or for self-declaration. Figure 1 is an example of an ISO 14001 gap analysis report showing the automatic compliance scoring, comparative performance data and action plan. The cost of GreenWare's software modules ranges from $700 to $2900. Single and multi-user licences are available.
PROCESS/ PRODUCT OPERATION:
  • gap analysis and audit reports
  • environmental costs and benefits
  • financial and environmental accounting
  • multiple users and locations
Greenware product features include: extensive guidance and on-screen instructions; context- specific ISO 14000 text; full customization, report writing, word-processing and spreadsheet capabilities; internal and external document linkages, including to Word and Excel documents and the Internet; document management, controls, verification, record-keeping and password-protection features; links to multiple locations and users, automatic data linkages, scoring and results analysis; special diagnostic features that automatically evaluate document completion and status; and customizable views for draft, final, manual and electronic documents. GreenWare software runs on the Caseware operating platform, used by over 70,000 financial professionals around the world to prepare their financial reports and working papers. This software platform allows users of GreenWare products to include environmental costing information that is linked directly to their financial information systems. The ISO 14000 Assessment Software identifies all the requirements of an EMS specified by ISO 14001, and allows businesses to perform a gap analysis with respect to these requirements. By completing a series of integrated and interactive check- lists, users are able to generate an automatic report of the results. The report also allows them to make recom- mendations and prepare a detailed action plan that identifies priorities, implementation costs, persons responsible and start and completion dates to ensure the requirements are met. This report is fully customizable and includes automatically generated comparative performance and cost allocation graphs, overall percentage of compliance and section-by-section results analysis. The ISO 14000 Implementation Software is an enhanced version of the ISO 14000 Assessment software that

contains all the components of the assessment soft- ware, plus a series of easy-to-use implementation worksheets. These comprehensive, linked and interactive worksheets guide users through every step of the ISO 14000 implementation process, from performing an initial environmental review to planning and development, through to implementation, monitoring, corrective action and management review. Figure 2 is an ISO 14000 Implementation worksheet for monitoring a company's environmental performance in terms of meeting its EMS objectives and targets. Specific and detailed instructions and procedures for implementation are included, as well as built-in features for records control and management and for assigning responsibilities that allow users to document and track their EMS implementation on an ongoing basis. The ISO 14000 Audit Software is designed for internal and external auditors performing an ISO 14000 audit, and consists of comprehensive and detailed audit procedures and tests for every ISO 14001 requirement, all linked to an automatically generated and customizable audit report and related reporting documentation. The software also includes detailed audit planning and administration procedures, from interactive checklists for evaluating a client's business, to checklists for assessing and scoring the inherent and control risks of the audit engagement, to a time and expenditures bud- get for the audit. This software can be used as a stand-alone, or as a companion product to the Assessment and Implementation products. Powerful electronic audit features include document control and verification to allow auditors to control the integrity of information throughout the audit process and to prepare a complete set of audit working papers. GreenWare's Environmental Performance Monitoring and Reporting Software, due for release in late 1997, will provide companies with an integrated electronic system for recording, monitoring and reporting on their environmental performance. It will also allow them to perform cost/benefit anal- yses for pollution prevention and other environmental projects, and to integrate their environmental and financial performance information for monitoring and reporting purposes, including full cost accounting.
