Lord & Partners Ltd. (L&P) manufactures a wide
range of environmentally responsible cleaners and degreasers specialising in non-toxic,
biodegradable, naturally derived solvents which are non-WHMIS and non-regulated. In
addition, the company sells a line of thermal/aqueous parts washers along with a paint gun
and line cleaner system, all of which are CSA approved. The combination of L&P parts
washing solution and a thermal/ aqueous parts washer creates a high performance parts
washing system that improves workplace health and safety conditions while reducing
cleaning costs, hazardous waste disposal costs, and environmental impacts. Thus far,
eleven products in the extensive L&P product line have been EcoLogoM certified under
Environment Canada's Environmental Choice Program (see Table 1).
L&P Environmental Management System (EMS) is registered
as meeting the requirements of ISO 14001:1996. Lord &
Partners Ltd. is registered under both the Swiss Accreditation
Service (SAS), Certificate 82154, and theStandards Council
of Canada (SCC), Certificate CA98/1183/E, accreditation schemes.

BACKGROUND:
|
| The use of
conventional organochlorine-based solvents presents an array of environmental health and
safety issues along with associated handling and disposal costs. L&P EcoLogoM
certified products are manufactured from a naturally-derived base, which consists of
unsaturated and low VOC cyclic hydrocarbons. These products are biodegradable,
non-greenhouse gas emitting, non-ozone depleting, low flash point, low odour, non-toxic,
non-carcinogenic, and are rated non-flammable under ECP guidelines for industrial and
commercial cleaners. The use of these products improves health and safety in the workplace
while reducing liability insurance, waste disposal costs, environmental impacts, and
long-term liabilities associated with conventional solvents. Table 2 compares the
environmental health and safety impacts of L&P EcoLogoM products and conventional
solvents. Traditionally, parts washers using Stoddard Solvent
or mineral spirits to dissolve oil and grease from parts, require frequent and costly
change-outs and disposal fees. L&P parts washing solution (L.P. Parts W. Sol.)
reduces the need for manifests, permits, and costly disposal contracts because it can be
disposed of as non-hazardous waste. When using L.P. Parts W. Sol., petroleum contaminants
float to the top of the solution where they are removed by an oil skimmer, and can then be
disposed of as waste oil. Because contaminants do not combine with L.P. Parts W. Sol.,
parts washers only need to be recharged every 12 to 15 months. The combination of the
longer lasting L.P. Parts W. Sol. along with the unique thermal/aqueous parts washer (CSA
approved) reduces the amount of costly change-outs required by conventional parts washing
systems along with the health risks associated with mineral spirits. |

L&P offers a Green Strategic Planning (GSP) service.
The GSP service involves an L&P product consultant meeting with management,
environmental managers, and health and safety supervisors to conduct an on-site inventory
of the harmful cleaning and degreasing products currently in use. A proposal for the
replacement of harmful cleaning and degreasing products with environmentally responsible
alternatives is subsequently forwarded. Alternative products are demonstrated and
maintenance and cleaning staff are trained for proper use on-site. A Certificate of
Environmental Commitment is issued to customers committed to reducing the environmental
impacts of their operations and improving workplace environmental health and safety.
L&P offers a complete parts washer system,
based on its LP Parts W. Sol. aqueous parts washing solution and the Composite Thermal/
Aqueous Parts Washer (Figure 2). The company also offers a bench-sized and jet spray model
in addition to a Paint Gun Cleaner which cleans paint guns without having to take them
apart for manual cleaning (Figure 3). Under normal conditions, 20 litres of PGL 2020 paint
gun and line cleaner will last approximately one year when recycled through the paint gun
cleaner. |
|
In addition
to their environmentally responsible line of EcoLogoM certified solvents and degreasers
and parts washing equipment, L&P offers over 100 traditional industrial and commercial
products. Their traditional line includes hand cleaners, natural and water-based
industrial solvents and degreasers, lubricants, oils and greases, automotive care
products, plumbing and pollution control centre products, general purpose cleaners and
degreasers, disinfectants, sanitisers and deodorisers, floor and rug and upholstery
cleaners. Forty five percent of these traditional products are non-WHMIS and
non-regulated. As part of their EMS, L&P is committed to further increasing the
percentage of non-WHMIS and non-regulated products in this line through research and
development of new products and will eventually replace all their traditional cleaning and
degreasing products.
